People on the ShitRedditSays community have pointed out that the (male) hive mind only approves of nude pictures of everyday women when they’re taken or posted nonconsensually. I’m not completely on-board with the agenda over there, but they’re disturbingly right about that.

Keep in mind that while your webcam creates the most invasive situation, these guys can listen to you via your computer microphone, control your computer remotely and look at every file you save including to remote cloud services like Dropbox. In the article it talks about how they use this to steal passwords, and look at where you save pictures from your phone (in case you have nude selfies) but the implications here are big. Do you work from home? Bank or deal with your finances on your computer? Are you a teacher who creates class material like tests on your computer? A therapist, legal consultant or social worker with highly confidential client material? Do you make important confidential phone calls within earshot of your microphone? All of that is affected.

I had to bug out of the article because it was creeping me so hard but we really need to compile strategies to make sure you don’t get infected with this software and resources for checking for it and removing it. In the wrong hands, this ability could be devastating.

Theoretically, if they put something on your computer you should be able to find it. Also I’m told computers keep access logs and even if they’re tampered with there are usually signs of tampering.

Also you can change your password regularly and make sure to use a strong password. But coming up with and memorizing strong passwords is hard so for a lot of people that’s kinda an impractical tip. Especially since good password hygeine is to use a different password for everything.

When I first started learning about this stuff, it was absolutely INSANE to think that there are so many people who do this, and and how little the repercussions against them are. I got into the hacking scene a while back and have had to personally deal with some really shitty situations similar to this. A few notes on how to protect yourself: it is IMPOSSIBLE to record anything through the webcam without the light turning on. If your webcam light is on, and you’re not running any programs that control your webcam, and you can’t access your webcam when you try, you may have been hacked. Also, it’s in their pathology to only “listen in” while watching through the Webcam, so if your webcam has a light, be sure to check it if you think you might have been infected.

Many of these “hacks” are done very sloppily/amateurish, and can easily be found and disabled in your computers startup menu, which can be accessed by typing “msconfig” into “Run”, and clicking on the “startup” tab. They often disguise their virus as trustworthy programs, so disable anything that you don’t ABSOLUTELY need upon computer startup. Granted, there are more sophisticated hacks, but this is the easiest way to weed out a large number of these petty freaks getting their jollies off from the safety of their rooms.

Unfortunately, antivirus isn’t the most helpful tool in this situation, as contrary to popular belief, it is rather easy to bypass and “hide” within the confines of a legitimate application. Antivirus is still a good tool to have [especially ones that scan runtime applications], but it’s not the only thing you should rely on.

The most common attacks occur through the use of “Java Drive-By’s”, in which a victim is directed to a website asking the user to “Allow Javascript on this page”, and we’ve ALL seen those warnings and thoughtlessly clicked on “allow”. Usually, there’s no problem with that, but if you’re on an unfamiliar site and you randomly get this popup, deny it.

FINALLY, those of you running on Macs are [for the most part], safe. These RATs are specifically tailored for Windows machines, as the filesystem Apple uses in their Mac systems are not susceptible to these attacks. You can still be infected on a Mac, but it requires physical access to the computer you’re trying to infect, as well as knowing what that computer’s administrative password.

I’m not into the “omg homophobia!” argument because johnlock has never been canon in any major ACD adaptation that people argue from, so to act like joanlock being canon would be homophobic ignores the fact that queerbaiting is in itself homophobic.

and I don’t really care about the “omg platonic relationship!” argument that gets thrown around. like, it’s all well and good if you don’t want sherlock and joan to get together because them falling into a sexual relationship seems to reaffirm the position of women as sexual objects that can’t avoid sexualization.

but there is another layer of de/sexualization that happens with people of color that that purely platonic to avoid sexualization argument doesn’t get into.

first off, women of color are sexualized in different ways from white women, and in different ways between ourselves as well according to the groups we get categorized into. to act like you can talk about all women in that kind of statement without talking about women of color is misguided at best.

but ultimately that’s not the crux of what bothers me about joanlock.

what actually bothers me? is the fact that I don’t need to goddamn see myself in another relationship with a goddamn white dude.

joan has been shown ONLY dating white men. and 1x09, the other episode with a strong chinese presence? white men white men white men. in fact marrying a white man became the happy ending and saving grace of the episode.

I’m tired of that. I’m a queer chinese-american woman. I have a younger brother and many Asian men who are near and dear to my heart who are desexualized regularly. white men are seen as more attractive than Asian men, and, as a woman-ish who loves her asian men dearly, I’m sick of seeing stories that reinforce that.

and there’s another level of grossness: interracial relationships with asian women are always with white men. non-asian men of color in relationships with asian women are still in interracial relationships, and yet you rarely of ever see that happening. what about joan/bell? joan/alfredo? I’m seeing no signs of canonicity there.

and that’s even assuming joan’s just into men. how about joan/carrie? that had strong canon fodder, and yet it wasnt canon. in fact, joan’s storyline with carrie had QUEERBAITING in it and I see virtually NO ONE talking about it.

I’m sick of being joan watson but not seeing myself represented. I’m into all men of color, and I’m tired of seeing asian men desexualized and passed over for white men. I’m into women of color. I’m into nonbinary people of color; I’m into genderescent people.

but the joan I see is a joan who just dates white men, and I get enough of that image from society.

elementary has a generally good track record in my book. I hope they do something awesome with joan, but joanlock? is not it.

Microaggressions tumblr’s post about the Disney Princess lunchbag reminded me to go to the Disney Store website to see what has resulted from the franchise’s recent redesign. It was cool to see a diverse array of kids playing with the toys on the website (although it’d be cool to see some boys playing with some of the Princess stuff, alongside the girls, too.)

This designed rolled out alongside the Cinderella blu-ray release. You can tell the merchandise is from the new “generation” because Cinderella has a different hairstyle (loose bangs), Jasmine’s earrings are different, and Belle has substantially more hair. (Note that in the film Cinderella has light brown hair and wears a white dress; in merchandise she usually has bright blonde hair and a blue dress.)

The vast majority of merchandise features multiple white princesses, usually in the forefront. Princesses of color may or may not be included, when they are included there is usually only one of them, even when there are more than one of them they are usually in positioned the background or off to the side.

While several items of merchandise feature a group of white Princesses, no items of merchandise as part of the Dinsey Princess product line feature Princesses of color. (Which would be different and heck, I’d buy it.)

There are even several outfits modeled by young black girls that do not feature Princess Tiana and instead feature a cluster of white princesses + Jasmine. There’s even an outfit modeled by an Asian girl that only features white princesses. (That’s not to say that girls of color can’t be fans of the princesses who are white, only to say that it is bizarre that the models are more diverse than the merchandise and that it’s odd that there is no outfit with only princesses of color modeled by a white girl, for example.)

Each product’s design positions the princesses differently, so this is not the case of using the same picture for several different pieces of merchandise. More pictures of merch here.

This merchandise can and does send implicit messages to kids. Disney…you just redesigned your merchandise and the women of color are still absent or on the margins.

I would just like to point out, as I always do, that Mulan isn’t a princess. She didn’t even marry into royalty. Pocahontas passes because as a chief’s daughter, she’s an Indian princess. Just something that’s annoying to me.

What an excellent public service. Yes, do please continue pointing out that Disney has some gumption to cram these women of color into the Eurocentric construct of royalty— I mean, by golly, Mulan’s princess status should clearly be defined by “having an important dad” or “marrying an important man.”

Extra credit for sorting Pocahontas into the mythical “Indian princess” category instead of into Gryffindor.
